Hayden Panettiere has died at 36.
The actress, best known for Heroes and Nashville, died Sunday in Greenville, South Carolina. She was found unresponsive at an apartment complex. Police and emergency responders arrived after a call from an acquaintance. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities say the preliminary investigation shows no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances. The cause of death has not been released. An autopsy was performed; further studies are pending.
She leaves behind her daughter, Kaya.
Just a few months earlier, in May 2026, Panettiere released her memoir This Is Me: A Reckoning and appeared on Jay Shetty’s podcast. In both, she described an incident from when she was 18, during the height of Heroes. A female friend she trusted took her onto a boat, led her downstairs to a cabin, and put her into bed next to a naked, very famous older British rocker/singer-songwriter. She said she had to fight him off and hide for the rest of the night while stuck out at sea. She has never publicly named the man or the woman who set it up.
Panettiere had recently traveled from Los Angeles to the South with her boyfriend before her death.
She was open in recent years about her long struggles with postpartum depression, addiction, and recovery. Her family released a statement calling her “an incredible light and a force of nature.”
